2009 Field Show: City of Angels
"City of Angels" was the first Broadway hit musical with a full-blown jazz score. The show is a musical comedy with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by David Zippel, and book by Larry Gelbart. It was performed as the LGHS Spring Musical in 2005.
The musical weaves together two plots, the "real" world of a writer trying to turn his book into a screenplay, and the "reel" world of the fictional film. Set in the glamour of the 1940s Hollywood film world, it tells the story of a young novelist creating a screenplay. Each character in the real world is echoed by a character in the reel world of the screenplay, a film noir private-eye tale with the sets and costumes all in black and white. There are two musical scores. One to help reveal certain emotions, celebrate particular moments. The other to emulate pure movie soundtrack music, 1940's vintage. "Every Breath I Take" is the lament to a strained relationship, sung by the black and white alter ego of the screenwriter’s wife.
City of Angels won the following Tony Awards in 1990.
